OBTAINED: -Magnesium is an alkaline earth metal and, therefore, magnesium can only be found combined with other elements. It is found in large deposits of magnesite (magnesium carbonate), dolomite and other minerals (e.g. mineral talc).
USAGE:
-magnesium components, mainly magnesium oxide, are used as a refractory material for furnaces in the steel industry - the production of iron and steel, non-ferrous metals industry, glass and cement industries;
-magnesium-oxide and other components are also used in agriculture (as fertilizer), chemical and construction industries;
-magnesium alloys are also used as structural components of automobiles.
-used to remove sulphides on iron and steel (iron and steel sulphides);
-combined in alloys, magnesium is essential in airplanes and missiles building industry;
-when alloyed with aluminum, it improves aluminum’s processing and welding mechanical characteristics,.
PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES: - very resistant metal, of white-silver color, very easy. It becomes slightly matt in the air. In thin strips, it’s easily flammable. Once ignited, it has a white flame, very bright, and it is difficult to extinguish it, magnesium being able to burn at its interaction with nitrogen and carbon dioxide.
